This is the TAA Lawrence Hargrave; a Boeing 727 VH-TBQ — the technical specifications and delivery history of the final, most capable generation of TAA's iconic tri-jet fleet.

TRANS‑AUSTRALIA AIRLINES (TAA) BOEING 727‑276 (ADVANCED)
The Boeing 727‑276 represented the final and most capable generation of the iconic 727 family. For TAA, the aircraft symbolised the airline’s transition into the 1980s—a decade defined by rising passenger demand, increased competition, and the need for greater efficiency on Australia’s busiest domestic routes.
VH‑TBQ Technical Details:
VH‑TBQ was built by the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company at Renton, Washington, between August 1979 and January 1980. The aircraft was part of the “Advanced” 727‑200 series, marketed by Boeing as the 727‑200A, which featured improved engines, higher take‑off weights, and better fuel efficiency than earlier models.

The aircraft rolled out at Boeing’s Seattle facility in November 1979 and completed its first flight on 13 December 1979. It was officially added to the Australian Civil Aircraft Register as VH‑TBQ on 15 January 1980.
On 20 January 1980, VH‑TBQ arrived at Melbourne–Tullamarine Airport at 12:02 local time, becoming one of the newest and most advanced jetliners in the TAA fleet.
ISLAND-HOPPING ACROSS THE PACIFIC
The delivery of VH‑TBQ followed a classic Pacific ferry route used by many Australian‑bound aircraft of the era:
Seattle → San Francisco → Hilo (Hawaii) → Pago Pago (American Samoa) → Brisbane → Melbourne
This route allowed for safe island‑hopping across the Pacific, with each stop providing refuelling and engineering support. The longest sector—San Francisco to Hilo—was well within the 727‑200’s ferry range when equipped with auxiliary fuel tanks.

Although navigation officers were being phased out globally due to modern avionics, long‑range ferry flights across the Pacific still required specialist celestial and long‑range navigation expertise in 1980.
ENGINEERED TO TAA STANDARDS
TAA’s engineering representatives played a crucial role in overseeing the aircraft’s final inspections, documentation, and acceptance testing at Boeing’s Renton facility.

A PIONEER’S NAME, A PROVEN WORKHORSE
VH‑TBQ was named Lawrence Hargrave in honour of the Australian aviation pioneer whose box‑kite experiments in the 1890s contributed to the development of modern aerodynamics. TAA’s tradition of naming aircraft after notable Australians reflected the airline’s commitment to celebrating national heritage. The 727‑276 served TAA and later Australian Airlines during a period of rapid growth in domestic air travel. Its 150‑seat capacity, powerful Pratt & Whitney JT8D‑17 engines, and excellent short‑field performance made it ideal for Australia’s major trunk routes.
VH‑TBQ’s operational life included thousands of flights across the Sydney–Melbourne–Brisbane triangle, as well as services to Adelaide, Perth, Hobart, and Launceston. The aircraft remained in service until the early 1990s, when the merger of Australian Airlines and Qantas reshaped the nation’s aviation landscape.
Much of the detailed delivery story was recorded by TAA Senior Production Inspector Joseph Favazza, whose firsthand account provides valuable insight into the aircraft’s construction, acceptance, and ferry flight.
Preserving the legacy of Trans-Australia Airlines — 150,000+ artefacts spanning 1946 to 1992, held by volunteers who refused to let the story disappear.
